R&B and Hip-Hop Rock Fusions of the ’90s.

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of old mix CDs that i’ve kept from over the years. It reminds me of songs that were my jam back in the day while also reminding me of my embarrassing guilty pleasures. While listening to one of these nostalgic compact discs, a very oh so familiar tune played and I nearly died. It was the hard hittin’ hip-hop/rock fusion known as the “It’s All About the Benjamins” Rock Remix. I was completely ALL about this remix. It made rock cool to the other brown kids at school that made fun of me for listening to Black Sabbath and Bush.

My first memory of any sort of hip-hop/rock fusion was actually, RUN-DMC’s “Walk This Way” video. My 2 year old child brain couldn’t handle how awesome it was. I remember dancing to it and having the feeling of “It’s going to be so cool when I am a grown up and I have rap/rock battles!” You watch this video and you tell me it’s not STILL one of the coolest things you’ve ever seen.

“It’s All About the Benjamins” Rock Remix definitely tried to bring that kick ass fusion element and I respect Diddy for that. Even some R&B musicians attempted at rocking out in their remixes. Not many people remember the greatness of the “Fix” by Blackstreet remix. It was so ace!

First of all, please note how HOT Slash is (and always is) in this video. Second of all, if you had Ol’ Dirty Bastard involved in your remix it instantly made it a hit (R.I.P. ODB, you were the perfect weirdo).

Why aren’t these hip-hop and R&B fusions popular anymore? I feel like they have the element of being great party starter music but they don’t seem to become a trend. How do you feel about these musical fusions?
