sprinkles and booze sit pretty fan

While typing this post I tried to say “folding hand fan” three times in a row and realized it’s impossible. Can you do it or am I just broken?

Aside from a fun tongue twister, folding hand fans make an elegant, chic, bold statement as a summertime accessory. I recommend that party girls everywhere listen up and take note – we’re about to kick it old school!

Folding fans have been used throughout history. Did you know that these cool devices have been around since at least 4th century BC? They were used in ancient Greece, but people then called them “rhipis”. Ceremonial hand fans were used to keep bugs off of bread and wine in church during the 6th century. In Spain, flamenco dancers used them to accentuate their artistic dancing while looking insanely fabulous. Most cultures and most art forms have taken the simplicity of a hand fan and turned it into something beautiful yet useful.

Throughout the years, hand fans have been used for fashion and practicality. Modern folding fans take the original idea and give them a bright new twist. Bright colors, sexy patterns, and a bunch of options make folding hand fans an obvious choice for a summertime accessory. I became obsessed with folding fans after a burlesque routine I performed for a local magazine party with some of my burlesque babes at Work It Dance and Fitness.

Because I believe in the power of the hand fan (also because I am sick of people side eyeing me for using one on the subway) here are my top 3 reasons why using a hand fan is kick-ass:

Be ever so thrifty. Stocking up on cute fans won’t break the bank. There are tons of places where you can buy a lot of them in assorted colors. Also Etsy has a ton of beautiful hand made options. Go crazy, go nuts! .

❤ Handy dandy.  If you’re on the subway and the power goes out you might feel pretty lucky that you’ve packed your most useful accessory. Stay cool AND pretty while everyone else swelters. You could even become a superhero and help others stay cool. Be the change you wish to see in the summer!

❤ Never out of style. I personally think that people stare when I use a hand fan because even though they’ve been around for ages, they aren’t the norm in North America. For the most part I’ve had strangers tell me how smart I was to have brought one or how beautiful my fans are. Pick a color or pattern to compliment your ensemble or just go with a fan that you’re “feeling” that day. I tend to just grab whatever tickles my fancy.

This post is simply a shout out to an accessory that has held it’s own for centuries. It is definitely something that should should be celebrated and I am happy to have introduced them into my norm. Stay cool, stay pretty and always….

Ain’t no party like a Grandma Ethyl Party.

Wednesday, May 14th, 2014

Being a 90’s child, shows from that decade are near and dear to my heart. One of my all time favorites from the early 90’s was the hit, Dinosaurs. If you ever watched Dinosaurs, you will remember brilliant catchphrases such as “Not the Mama!” or “I’m the baby, gotta love me!”. All frequently used, wonderful, and nostalgic…right?!

Lately, I’ve been watching the series on Netflix before bed. A character you may vaguely remember is the snide, elderly greatness that is Grandma Ethyl. Ethyl by far was my favorite character of the entire show!

Grandma Ethyl was the grumpy yet adorable mother of Fran Sinclair on Dinosaurs. This wheelchair-bound diva is everything I hope to be when I am a senior citizen. Forever dressed in a fascinator and witty one liners, I definitely would want to party with Grandma Ethyl. She is the inspiration behind this Bingo Lady Party style board I have created. Even though this series had one of the world’s most depressing series finales, I hope you enjoy this style board. You better because you gotta love it! Honestly, how can you go wrong with Strawberry Cheesecake truffles and doilies?!

mommie-dearest Sprinkles and Booze

It’s that magical time of year, where we are getting glimpses of Spring. Mother nature can be rather testy this time of year. What better mother to depict Spring than Mommie Dearest.

Before you think I am some dark and twisted person, let me explain myself. Joan Crawford, one of Hollywood’s greatest stars, was defined as a sadistic control freak in the film Mommie Dearest. The first time I saw Mommie Dearest, I was at a youth group sleepover during Halloween. I was very confused as to why someone that fabulous would be so horrible to her children. It was terrifying and puzzling (and still is). Mommie Dearest, like the Spring, can be beautiful and nurturing one moment, and a complete bitch of a storm the next.

To say Faye Dunaway’s performance as Joan Crawford is over-the-top is an understatement. To match the great performance, I went completely over-the-top with this style board. I was itching to have a floral/gold girly party. Don’t be surprised if I do a styled shoot inspired by this board. I am kind of in love with it. I thought it would be ideal to recreate Christina Crawford‘s birthday party scene but give it a modern twist.

My style board includes everything for the perfect Mommie Dearest spring party. From an eyebrow brush for the perfect eyebrows to colorful macaroons. The board also features a beautiful sequin hanger from Pearls and Pastries and confetti from The Confetti Bar. Check, check it!

SheRa Princess of Power Sprinkles and Booze

To start off the New Year and finish up some unfinished business from last year, I wanted to finish the “Everyday stylings of a super-heroine”.

Up next on the list is one of my all time favs! It’s none other than She-Ra Princess of Power. When I was a little girl, I used to think She-Ra was one of the most fabulous characters to ever happen in life. From her flawless golden hair to her amazing dress, she is perfection.

When making a fashion board to show how I would represent She-Ra in a fun glam daytime look, I wanted to showcase as much gold and bling as possible without going over the top Blanche Devereaux. Below are the results…

michonne Sprinkles and Booze

Last but most definitely not least we have a look inspired by Michonne from the ever so popular and amazing, The Walking Dead. I’ve had people say to me “Michonne isn’t a super-heroine!” I think a superhero/heroine is whomever you really find SUPER and badass. Michonne is more of a super-heroine than most that were born WITH superpowers. Check out my board inspired on her threads below…
