I impatiently counted down the days to opening night of one of the strongest and most graphic horror film remakes, Evil Dead. I am a horror movie fanatic. I am typically torn on whether or not I agree with remaking some of the horror classics but with writers Fede Alvarez, Diablo Cody , and Sam Raimi on board, I knew it was going to be a perfect storm.

No worries, there are NO SPOILERS in this review. I just wanted to write about the film while it’s fresh in my head and share my opinion on the brilliant insanity. The plot is unique and smart. While staging a drug intervention in a remote cabin, Mia (Jane Levy) and her four friends accidently awaken an unspeakable evil. They must then band together to destroy the spirit before it takes over Mia’s soul.

The opening dialog between the friends was written in traditional Diablo Cody fashion. It’s quirky, young, and has hints of humor. The moment the “Book of the Dead” is opened is when the fun (and by fun I mean terror) begins. If you have a weak stomach, this film is not made for you. You will not be spared of the gore, I repeat YOU WILL NOT BE SPARED! Typically, I am not one that enjoys loads of gore but, this film finds clever ways to make sure the gore isn’t a safety. There are scenes in which you will want to turn away because of the amount of demonic violence but the film remains intriguing to the point where you can’t stop watching.

If you’re a fan of the original Evil Dead film, you are designed to love cheesy horror movies. This remake’s plot is pretty cheese-tastic but in my opinion, it makes it perfect. The film is full little tidbits that only Evil Dead fans would notice. The movie is definitely more for the fans but it will get a reaction out of the regular movie goer.

As I was typing this I received a text message from a friend that she just saw the film. Apparently she won’t be sleeping for days AND there are extras after the credits. I might have to see the movie again in the cinema. This is Fede Alvarez’s first feature film and he did a hell of a job. He had a lot to live up to and handled the challenge amazingly.

Do not brave it alone or try to eat your movie snacks while watching this movie. Pick out an outfit and get your ass to the cinema for a scary good time.

Stay sexy Gotham!
