How to get rid of the winter lips blues.

It’s January and winter here on the east coast. Winter typically means the same for a lot of us, super dry, chapped, and un-kissable lips. Lets all face it, with dry cold air and lower humidity our lips get a beating. Chapped lips are not only the most un-sexy but they can also be painful.

Having sexy lips is a desire of most ladies and some dudes. Making this desire a reality is actually pretty simple. Actually caring for your lips as you would for the rest of your skin is the fastest and easiest way to restore the natural moisture of lips. Lip hygiene is just as important as your face, arms, legs, etc. It needs to be handled on a regular basis.

Lip balm it up! I can not express how many lip lotions and potions I have. It’s kind of embarrassing but very much so necessary. Lip balm isn’t only for the winter months, but should be used with the changing seasons. During summer months use lip balms with sun screen of some sort to protect your lips against harmful UV rays. In the winter (and on some cloudy days) you should use lip balm that is enriched with shea butter and glycerin. This will reduce dry and cracked lips.

Stop licking your damn lips! It’s not helping your situation, at all.

Drink lots and lots of water. This is good for ALL of your skin. It also helps with your lip health.

Olive oil is ace! If you’re more of an all natural person and are having a hard time deciding which natural lip product to use, olive oil also works wonders on your lips.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! Shed off the dead skin cells from you lips so you always have fresh skin to work with. I do this about every other day.

Citrus is helpful! I eat lemons almost daily (yes, I said EAT) and a while back I was reading that most citrus based fruits help with skin health which of course includes your lips.

Rose water smells awesome and makes you pretty. When cleaning your face, try to spray some rose water on it and let it air dry. Spray a little extra on your lips for additional lip benefits.

Drown your life in Coconut Oil.

I have had eczema my entire life and have gone to a ton of different dermatologists. Some of them have been beneficial but all of them offered skin products that has been full of harsh chemicals and sometimes even steroids. I have been on a more natural and holistic journey over the past few years. This includes food, hygiene products, skin care, herbs, and loads more.

One great benefit about purchasing natural products is how most natural products can be used for multiple things. There are some herbs that can fix a rash, a messed up knee, make your hair grow, and get you pregnant all at the same time. I am not sure what herb that would be but I am sure it’s out there…somewhere. Possibly. ANYWAY, one of the OG’s of a great natural products that works for a million things is coconut oil.

I haven’t been using it that long but instantly realized the awesome that is coconut oil. Being a typical female, I can’t help but buy the latest lotion and skin care product that is going to make you at some point look like the super model in the commercial. People have recommended coconut oil to me often and I was caught up in the “I need to buy that skin product that I saw at Sephora because that is the best out there! I feel like it in my ovaries!” Don’t get me wrong, I still love Sephora but sometimes you need to turn down that inner beauty product snob and embrace the facts. Once I turned down the volume of my inner diva and researched the benefits of coconut oil, I realized coconut oil RULES! It is loaded with Vitamin E and fatty acids (such as lauric acid, myristic acid, capric acid and more) which are anti-fungal, anti-oxidizing and anti-bacterial, everything our biggest organ needs in order to be healthy and happy.

When I told a friend that I was going to use coconut oil as my daily moisturizer she insisted that i’ve gone mad and you can’t use something you cook with all over your body. I am not sure when women stopped relying on homemade beauty remedies to get the job done, but a lot of women depend on chemical filled beauty products these days and ladies, we need to change this. Women in the 40s didn’t have the luxury of choosing between Clinique or Lancôme but they still took beauty seriously. They were queens of gathering things straight from their kitchens, putting it all over their bodies, and always looking stunning.

With all of this said, lets break it down and get right into where to use coconut oil and how it’s been working for me.

For the dead cells on your head:

I typically don’t have dry hair or scalp but I have been using coconut oil as a hair and scalp moisturizer as of lately. It’s seems that it is best to use coconut oil a little while before you shower and wash your hair. I just put a small amount in my ‘problem’ areas and then wash my hair like I normally would. It’s also fantastic for any frizz issues you may have. If you add a small amount to your hair while straightening, styling, drying, or whatever you will notice quickly that it combats that frizzy awfulness.

Dark Elbows of doom:

I read not that long ago that coconut oil is perfect for getting rid of dark/dry elbows. I have been putting some extra oil on both my elbows once in the morning and once at night for a while now and the results are NUTS. I wish I took a before photo but the difference made my brain explode out of the back of my head.

Rashes, Eczema, Psoriasis, Severe Dryness, and Ebola:

I personally suffer from eczema and server dry skin. Out of all of the natural remedies i’ve tried coconut oil has been hands down the best. It also helps with other skin conditions and if you have a random rash. I apply coconut oil to any part of my body that is itchy or feels dry almost right away. Like my elbows, I typically will apply it to my whole body twice a day. Lately since it’s cooler weather, I have been overdosing on coconut oil but am noticing great improvements in my skin. As far as ebola…I am sure coconut oil can help with that…somehow. Science!

Eat it up because it’s good for you:

I am not a fan of coconut, at all. BUT for those of you that are better than me, you can use it as a spread instead of butter, in your baking, and your cooking. Make sure if you plan on eating your coconut oil you are buying the type that you can cook with. There are lots of cosmetic coconut oil products that I am not sure are safe to eat but if you buy it from the cooking area at your market then you’re good to go. You can use that on your face and in your tummy.

I recently purchased the Spectrum Essentials coconut oil for skin and hair care. So far it’s my fav! I try to stick with unrefined, pure virgin or extra-virgin. Go straight up organic if you can. The great thing about coconut oil is a little goes a long way so you don’t have to use a ton of it when applying it to your desired areas. You can buy coconut oil at your local market, healthy food store, or online (Amazon has a million brands!). For all of the amazing benefits of coconut oil, it is shockingly inexpensive compared to what us ladies will spend on some beauty products.
