Sprinkles and Booze

The Alternative Hipster.

March 16, 2014 | Life's a Party!

Sprinkles and Booze Hipster

A few weeks ago, I was conversing with my friend Michelle. I asked her to honestly describe who I am as a person. After a few minutes of talking, Michelle mentioned that she found me to be a “real alternative hipster”. She said I am offbeat but positive. Typically, people would hear “hipster” and be like, “NO! Not me!” but I loved it. I became curious to know why people took offense to being called a hipster.

I find it pretty funny that if there  is anything a hipster hates more, is actually being identified as a hipster. I cannot tell you how many times I have had someone who was wearing a indie band tshirt and riding a fixed gear bike tell me, “Dude, I hate hipsters”. Fear and self-loathing in Williamsburg anyone? I understand the resistance though.

Hipster-hood was started as an ironic subculture but somewhere down the line morphed into the only culture forcing people from all walks of life to huddle under the same cultural umbrella. Today you can put two people together with two completely different styles and interests and still label them both a hipster. Sadly the term “hipster’ is losing it’s luster. In fact, not being a hipster is now the most sub-culture-y thing to do.

Because hipster has been used to describe so many types of people, I accept  “Alternative Hipster” with arms wide open. I am completely content with wearing cute clothing and searching for interesting new music. The definition of a hipster has been so watered-down that we are all some form of a hipster. It has become a blanket term for our generation, and I like how Michelle broke it down. I asked her to define what a “Alternative Hipster” really is. Here are some of the magical traits:

The Alternative Hipster

❤ Always marching to your own drummer even if it was at the cost of being ostracized during high school.

❤ Can have a legit conversation about Marvel/DC and super obscure comic books.

❤ Has learned to not judge folks unless they are truly assholes.

❤ Dropping/Recommending strictly obscure people not to show off but to share AND not being an asshole about it.

❤ Enjoying most if not ALL Apple (Mac) products.

❤ Having a very specific taste in food.

❤ Talking about and lusting over Europe at least once a week.

❤ Enjoying the quality/sound of vinyl since you were born.

Practically anyone can fall under the category of hipster. I think it’s time for most of us to quit fighting it. The term “if you smelt it you dealt it”  can apply to being called a hipster. When you fight it and/or call others hipsters, it just makes you look more like a hipster. The term has sort of morphed to a point in which we need categories and stages. There are worse things you could be called. “Oh no, someone thinks I’m interesting, hip, kinda nerdy and attractive! Please stop with the name calling!” Embrace it, bitches!

I take pride in being an alternative hipster. Hipsters can be complicated, brilliant, eco-friendly, and all around interesting characters. I embrace everything that I enjoy and have no shame in my game.

I just realized that this is my second post I have written about hipsters. So much hipster love! What flavor of hipster do you think you are?

March 15, 2014 | LoveU: Get Schooled on Self Celebration

LoveU copy

It’s time for another life celebration lesson with your favorite professor, Lady Sprinkles. We all know it can be really easy and really great to have a random cheat day on your diet. We think that it will be ever so easy to get back our regular scheduled programming the following day. I know that most of the time, I would be a-okay snuggling with a pint of ice cream while watching old “Breaking Bad” episodes. It’s easy and enjoyable and in that moment, we think we are happy, right? Until tomorrow.

For some of us, that junk food day could bring on tummy issues or skin freak outs but the deeper issue is you’ve decided to put a break on your life. I do honestly believe that the way we do one thing, is the way we do everything. I can not focus or get anything done if everything around me is messy. The mess is a reflection of what is happening inside of me. It drives me mad. A lot of folks believe that if they weigh less they would be able to live more. Getting healthy can be considered the first step to getting the life you desire. By saying “I will start my diet again tomorrow” is the same as saying “I will get my shit together tomorrow”. Do you see how this can become a toxic cycle?

So what happens when tomorrow comes? Usually, I continue to say “F**k it!” because it’s the easier option. We continue to feel stuck and drowning in the impending doom. Last I checked, this isn’t part of living the life you’ve dreamed of. If you’re putting off eating well until tomorrow, you’re probably putting off finding a new job, signing up for that cooking class you wanted to take, sending emails you really need to get out, planning your future, etc. Most of us believe that it will just feel easier tomorrow, next week or next year. We tell ourselves that, “Tomorrow we will have more time, more money, and we will be supermodels.” Obviously tomorrow, life will magically be easier and making changes will fit more conveniently into your schedule. I hate to say it, but we are only bamboozling ourselves.

tomorrow Sprinkles and Booze

Stop the self bamboozle-ment. Life is never going to be easier – make the changes you want to make TODAY. The hardest part about living what you dream is starting. Why keep yourself in the state of starting when you could be living. I want my motor to run on magic and glitter, but I have to face reality that the only thing to get me going is putting in the time and the energy. Whether it takes 5 minutes or 3 hours a day, it is about committing yourself to yourself. Life will start to suddenly seem really easy.

Are you ready to make a self commitment that you will stick with? What can you do to end the cycle of “on again” and “off again”? Well, one of the major first steps is giving up guilt. Don’t shame yourself because you wanted to have ice cream after dinner, instead enjoy the progress you’ve made overall. When you dedicate 80% of your efforts to your goal, it’s better than shortly giving 100% and giving up altogether. Fight the good fight and you will see positive life results.

The journey of finding your balance requires a lot of work but it should be exciting and make you happy. I do not personally believe of depriving yourself of anything. Your happiness is what is most important, forever and always. No number on the scale should determine your bliss.

When we stop giving ourselves rules and change our mindset, we make magic. No one likes rules and we tend to want to break them. I am making a self commitment to try to think of a few ways to make my life healthier in general, without being unhappy…mind, body, and soul. Make your purpose and goals realistic and stop disappointing yourself. We are all humans here (I think), and where we are perfect, is being imperfect. Our imperfections are beautiful and make our lives worth living.

So here is my personal invitation to the biggest and best party of the year. I invite you to be inspired to take your own path to your inner happiness. I would like to introduce #ProjectPartySalad! For 100 days, I will commit myself to finding something every day to enhance the health of my mind, body and soul. This journey is obviously a life change and will go beyond 100 days, but I want to invite you to follow my first days, experience my struggles and feel inspired.

It’s party time, guys! Who is ready for some adventure? Are you as pumped as I am?

March 14, 2014 | Events are Fun

It’s not always easy thinking of new things to do with your friends. There are only so many movie and dinner nights you can handle before you’re tired of doing the same old thing. We all enjoy creative and unique gatherings, but don’t always have the time or energy to put into planning.

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 5.29.26 PM

Last month I was an attendee of Little Black Business Book’s first ever Art + Alcohol event. The event encourages you to unleash your inner Picasso, while eating delicious tapas by Whisk + Brush and gettin’ tipsy, I mean enjoying wine.

When we arrived to the event, the room was buzzing with excited people. We all grabbed our drinks and food while listening to the musical stylings of a live pianist. As soon we took our seats, we had the overwhelming feeling to get our paint on. I MAY or may not have started painting before I was supposed to, but that is the beauty of an event like this. You’re to make it your own and you don’t need experience to have a great time.

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 5.29.50 PM

We were supplied with paint, canvas, a smock, a drink, some macaroons and some good old fashioned hope. You know, all of the essentials to create our masterpieces. While we were unleashing our inner creatives geniuses, there were raffle drawings for some pretty magical prizes. The grand prize was a 3 day 2 night stay in Las Vegas. I would have never imagined that I would be the one to win such a lovely prize but apparently lady luck was on my side. Get it, because it’s Vegas. Whatever…i’m funny! ANYWAY…YAY, I am going to Vegas! I was blessed to be hanging out with good friends while making new friends, so winning the grand prize was literally just the cherry on top of my sprinkle covered cupcake.

Ashley Keller, owner of My Little Black Business Book, is the mastermind behind this creative and expressive booze-y event. “My mother in law is a painter and we were having wine and painting during my last visit to South Carolina when she said ‘This is so fun…painting and drinking wine with you.’ and a light bulb went off.” Ashley stated. “I want people to enjoy the same experience we had and POOF….Art + Alcohol was born.” and thank goodness it was. Being born and raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut I know we could always use more interesting events to give our city life. Ashley mentioned that she wants to turn Art + Alcohol into a series and introduce other mediums of art as well.

Screen Shot 2014-03-14 at 5.30.30 PM

When asking Ashley how she felt about the outcome of the first Art + Alcohol event, she said “I am overwhelmed with excitement about the outcome! Everyone that came had a blast!” and being a guest, I can easily say she is correct. The event completely sold out and was full of positive energy. So when is the next Art + Alcohol? Ashley, being the amazing planner that she is, already has the next event lined up. The  Spring Fling edition of Art & Alcohol will be held on Thursday, April 10th!

Art+Alcohol (1)

Connecticut based artist, Nicole Grant-Paul will once again instruct us on how to be world class artists while being wine-os. Nicole gave us really simple instructions to follow and made sure we mixed our paint in the proper hues. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us this time around.

Sprinkles and Booze Art + Alcohol

Anything involving art and booze will always make for a legit good time. Grab some girl friends (or dude friends), don’t forget your laughter, and get ready to create. Life celebrations always create the best memories. I am beyond excited and can’t wait for this artsy spring fling.

Most fine artists are winos, right? Come and be merry, drink wine and as always…

Sprinkles and Booze small celebrations

One of my personal life goals is to assure that I am celebrating life daily. No matter how busy or how crazy the day can get, I try to remember the main point of living is to live.

This morning, while away on a Boston business trip I woke up with a case of the Mondays. My back has been bothering me for a couple of weeks now, I have to deal with a minor car issue when I get back home, on top of laundry and the other “gifts” that life hands us along the way. I am trying to make a habit of making daily gratitude lists. No matter how silly or how small the celebration, it’s still a celebration. Here are some of the rad things that are going well in my life right now…

1. Waking up to a beautiful sunny winter day in Boston this morning. Yes, we’ve had a brutal winter but nothing beats the beauty that it truly brings.

2. The coffee maker in my hotel room. I’m about to use the hell out of it and YES, I am excited.

3. Disco the Unicorn! One of my Valentine’s Day gifts from my boyfriend was a stuffed unicorn that I instantly fell in love with. I named him Disco because it seemed proper.

4. My new Stila lip color of choice is Stila Gemma color balm lipstick. This lipstick is so wonderful I might need to have a separate post dedicated to it’s greatness.

5. Awesome party design opportunities that are on the rise. I’ve been properly getting my hustle on and not quitting my daydream. It’s actually paying off and it’s a blessing on a million levels.

6. Laughter! I am forever grateful for being able to laugh and giving the gift of laughter to others (most of the time without even trying).

7. You guys! If it wasn’t for you guys, I definitely would not have made it this far in my blogging/party making career. You are the raddest and complete me.

Sprinkles and Booze small celebrations 1

Life is full of little things to be excited about. No matter how shit your day may seem, there is always something worth celebrating. I have trained myself to push through the rubbish because it is just that…rubbish. Most issues are temporary and shouldn’t get in the way of your overall success and happiness. Sometimes we find it easier to give in to the negative but that is not living.

Gratitude lists are nothing new, but they often get lost in our daily grind. We should all make it our personal goal to remember to cherish and celebrate ourselves. To keep myself on track, maybe I should share my mini daily celebrations more often.

What are you excited about celebrating today? Go out and get a Cotton Candy Cupcake because you deserve one and as always…

What does Spring taste like in New Haven, Connecticut?

February 13, 2014 | Brews & Chews

brewsandchews

Hey Party Monsters! It’s time for Brews & Chews! So what tasty event, food, or booze will I be talking about today? Ladies and gentlemen, you might need to brace yourselves for this one.

Something magical and tasty is springing up for Spring in New Haven, Connecticut. Connecticut’s largest indoor festival will be celebrating two cornerstones of American heritage: Fermented grains & Salted meats. I think it’s an ideal way to kick off the end of a pretty harsh winter. I bring you Connecticut’s 1st Annual 4B Festival!

banner-flat

Craft BREWS, BACON, BOURBONS AND BARBECUE! Did you pass out yet? There will be some of the finest flavors from around the region to excite your taste buds (among other things) in the best way possible. There are no words that can express how excited I am for this event. To be honest, I might be extremely overwhelmed already. I will be attending 4B Festival followed by FUSION UNION: Not Your Mother’s Wedding Expo. Yes guys, it’s going to be an awesome day indeed.

The 4B Festival is already a smash hit! The event sold out so quickly that the organizers had to add a second session. So rad! With all of the ranting and raving on the internet about The 4B Festival, I only found it right to interview the founder David Salinas. Here is the transcript from my interview with the mastermind behind this brilliant festival.

What made you decide that now was the time for 4B Festival to take over the wonderful city of New Haven?

There’s no better time than the present. New Haven is as great of a city as any other major metro in our eyes and we are just trying to do our part to shine a light on the facts.

What are you hoping will come from the Festival?

First and foremost we hope people enjoy themselves. We’d love for this festival to be a regular staple in the region for years to come.

I am expecting this Festival will leave no corner in the world of beer, bourbon, bbq and bacon unturned. With that said, there are a lot of people living a gluten free life. Will there be gluten free options there?

We are doing our best to cover all of the bases. It’s really up to the vendors to bring options like that.

I am definitely a lady that loves the world of booze. Are you one with bourbon and beer? Also, what’s your favorite bourbon and beer?

I am a bourbon fan first and then beer. For bourbon my favorites right now are Colonel Taylor, Eagle Rare and Bookers. As we get into unicorns I would say Pappy Van Winkle or the Michter 20 year. I also love the Eagle Rare 17 year. As we get into beers, I am open to everything but super darks and stouts. They are a little too rich for my taste.

Sprinkles and Booze Bacon

Something amazing that i’ve come to love the flavor of is chocolate covered bacon. It’s probably one of the most wonderful things that could happen to your mouth. Have you tried cooking bacon in beer or bourbon? How was it? Have you tried chocolate covered bacon?

I haven’t had or cooked bacon in beer or bourbon, but I have had bacon beer and bacon bourbon and they were both weirdly delicious. As far as bacon covered chocolate goes, all I can say is mhmm. Bacon anything is pretty much good in my book. My favorite to date was salted bacon caramels.

If a new superhero hit the streets and his name was “Captain Bourbon” what do you think his superpower would be?

I think he would be able to randomly produce American oak barrels that he would heave at villains.

Do you have any superpowers that you wish to share?

I’m pretty amazing at predicting movie and TV plots. Does that count?

There are so many people extremely excited about 4B Fest (myself included). I feel like it’s impossible for this not to be a massive explosion of positive energy and great fun. What are you hoping the city of New Haven gets from the 4B Fest? What experience do you want people to leave the fest with?

We are doing are the best to make sure this a positive energy-filled event. Wherever possible we are looking to add value, so people leave with smiles on their faces. We’ve been getting some grief about the limited tickets, which is disheartening. We sold out the first session in nine days and then added the second session to accommodate more people. One would have imagined that people would have bought tickets earlier, but after 40 days on sale, we sold out. We are doing our best now to add capacity if possible, but if it isn’t a possibility we hope people understand and buy earlier next year.

Needless to say, THIS WILL BE EPIC! Here is a link to some of the vendors that will be there. If you’re attending, then I would definitely check back to see what vendors will be serving up some deliciousness for your face unit. Tell the truth, how much is your mouth watering right now?
