Dance ’til you’re dead!

Since I was a senior in high school, I have been shaking my bum to the amazing that is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They were always one of those bands that my friends didn’t understand because they never heard of them.  My parents wouldn’t allow me to venture into NYC along so I could also never go see them play. Let’s fast forward to 11 years in the future, and I am still shaking my bum to their amazing music AND I not only can I venture into NYC on my own, but now I practically live in the big apple.

Sunday evening, I made 18 year old Latanya a happy girl. I finally experienced Yeah Yeah Yeahs live and in color. The experience overall was a whimsical one. The stunning lead singer, Karen O is a superstar. I think it’s impossible not to be in a trance while watching her dance and jump around on the stage. Karen O has always won my heart because she is a girl that sure does love her sparkle. She mixes glitter and studs like a bad ass super fairy and it’s fantastic.

The weather on Sunday in NYC was wonderful. I thought the streets were going to be filled with people trying to get to Wrestlemania but it was very mellow and honestly, perfect. I jumped in a cab and headed over to Webster Hall to get my dance on.

This show was part of a pre-release celebration of their new LP, Mosquito. The opener was a fun garage-y Brooklyn based band called X-Ray Eyeballs. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs played some of their hits and a lot of the new jams. There are moments in life where a bunch of people are together in a room and there is a certain type of energy. The energy that creates magic that you will remember for years. This was one of those evenings. I sang along to all of the classics and danced so hard that I hurt my ankle.

If you haven’t listened to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and want to give them a go, I would recommend definitely starting with Fever to Tell. I promise you will not be disappointed. One of their biggest hits from that LP is Maps, which was performed during the encore. I have yet to meet a person that isn’t in love with this song. I know people that aren’t really into the rest of the band’s music but completely in love with Maps. I might seriously have to use this song for my first dance at my wedding someday.

Have you ever seen the Yeah Yeah Yeahs perform? I am sure that the new album will call for a tour so you should definitely check them out and dance ’til you’re dead. Well, at least half dead. Or undead. ZOMBIES!

I don’t know if you’re a glee fan, but a few years ago they did a pretty awesome mash up of the yeah yeah yeah’s heads will roll and Micheal Jackson’s Thriller.
